Quick answer

Add the text to Outloud Reader once, as photos, a PDF or pasted text, and it becomes audio in a natural voice. The audio stays in your library on your phone, so it plays offline and with the screen off, and playing it again is free. Listen at any speed from 0.5× to 1.25×.

How to turn reading
into audio.

Make the book before you leave; listen wherever you are.

  1. Add the reading

Photograph pages one after another, pick photos from your gallery, choose pages from a PDF, or paste an article.

  2. Tap Create while you’re online

The text is recognised and voiced online. The audio is then kept on your device, in your library.

  3. Put the phone away

Press play and lock the screen: the book plays with the screen off, and without a connection.

  4. Play it again, free

Every book stays in your library with its audio. Playing it again uses no pages, as often as you like.

Read aloud while commuting, walking or cooking.

The articles, chapters and notes you meant to read, ready for the time your eyes are busy.

  • Make the book while you’re online; after that it plays offline.
  • Speed it up to 1.25× for a long read, or slow it down to 0.5× for the hard parts.
  • Up to 50 pages go into one book; make the next chapters into another.
  • Playback pauses for calls and alarms, and resumes when they’re done.
  • Look at the screen whenever you like: the phrase being spoken is highlighted.

Questions about listening on the go.

Something else? Write to support@outloudreader.app and a person will answer.

Does it play with the screen off?

Yes. The audio stays in your library on your phone, so a book plays with the screen off, and offline.

Do I need an internet connection?

To create a book, yes: the text is recognised, translated and voiced online. The audio is then kept on your device.

Can I download the audio as an MP3?

No. The audio stays in your library in the app, ready to play again as often as you like, at no cost. It isn’t exported as a file.

Does listening again cost anything?

No. Playing a book again is free, as often as you like. Pages are used only when a book is made; see pricing.
