The app and getting started

Is this an e-book reader?

No. There’s no store and no catalogue. Outloud Reader turns the text you bring into audio: photos of pages, PDFs, text you paste, or a text written for you by AI.

Is it a text to speech app?

It turns text from photos, PDFs and pasted text into natural speech in 14 languages, but it’s made for listening and following along: each phrase is highlighted, and the text can be translated first. The audio stays in your library in the app; it isn’t exported as an MP3 file.

Is this an online text to speech tool?

No, it’s an app. Paste the text in the app; the text is voiced online, and the audio is then kept on your device, in your library, to play again as often as you like.

Who is it for?

Anyone who would rather listen to a text, or listen and read together: students, people who prefer to listen, language learners, and anyone who finds a spoken, highlighted text easier to follow. See all use cases.

Adding pages: photo, PDF, text and AI

Can it read a photo I already took?

Yes. Choose Gallery and pick the photos; each one becomes a page of the same book, read aloud with each phrase highlighted.

Can it read handwriting?

Yes. Photograph the page or pick a photo, and the handwriting is recognised and read aloud with each phrase highlighted. Clear writing works best; very messy writing may not be recognised.

Can it read a screenshot aloud?

Yes. Choose Gallery and pick the screenshot; the text in it is recognised and read aloud with each phrase highlighted.

Can it read a PDF aloud?

Yes. Open a PDF, choose the pages you want, and crop away headers, footers and page numbers. Up to 50 pages go into one book.

Can I listen to just some pages of a PDF?

Yes. Choose the range you want; the other pages are left out. Up to 50 pages go into one book.

Will it read the page numbers and headers?

Not if you crop them away. Crop the margins and only the text inside is read aloud.

How long can the text be?

A long text is split into pages of up to 2,500 characters each, and up to 50 pages go into one book. Each page is one page of your balance.

Can it write texts at my level?

Yes. Describe a topic or tap Surprise me, choose A1–A2, B1–B2 or C1–C2 and a length of one to three pages. Writing is free; pages are used only when you make the text into a book.

How many AI texts can I write?

Up to 20 a day. Every text you receive counts, including Surprise me texts and texts you don’t make a book of; a request refused before writing doesn’t. After 6 refused requests in a day, writing is paused until the day ends. A day ends at midnight UTC; the app shows that moment in your own time zone.

What won’t the AI write?

AI texts are written for a 13+ audience. Sexual content, graphic violence, hate and dangerous instructions are refused, among other things; the full list is in the content rules.

“No text found on this page”

Usually the page is at an angle, in its own shadow, or the phone focused on the edge of the book rather than the text. Lay the book flat, let the camera settle and keep the whole text inside the frame — or paste the text yourself.

Listening and highlighting

Can I use it to practise listening in English or another language?

Yes. Photograph or paste a page in the language you’re learning and listen while each phrase is highlighted. Slow it down to 0.5×, repeat a sentence up to five times, or hide the text and listen first.

How does it show where I am?

The phrase being spoken is highlighted and its sentence set in black, while the rest of the page waits in grey. If your attention drifts, look for the highlight to find your place again.

Can I just listen, without looking at the text?

Yes. Hide the text and listen, and hold to check a line whenever you want to see it.

Can I change how the text looks?

Yes. Choose light, sepia or dark, and set the contrast, the text size and the line spacing to suit you.

Can I practise reading aloud with it?

It gives you a voice to copy: listen to a sentence, repeat it up to five times, and say it along with the voice. The app reads to you; it doesn’t listen to you or score your pronunciation.

Does it play with the screen off?

Yes. The audio stays in your library on your phone, so a book plays with the screen off, and offline.

Can I download the audio as an MP3?

No. The audio stays in your library in the app, ready to play again as often as you like, at no cost. It isn’t exported as a file.

Is this a text to speech app for dyslexia?

It’s a text to speech app for anyone who would rather listen, or listen and read together. It isn’t a treatment or a test, and it isn’t only for dyslexia; many people simply find a spoken, highlighted text easier to follow.

Is this an app for ADHD?

It’s a text to speech app for anyone who would rather listen, or listen and read together. It isn’t a treatment or a test, and it isn’t only for ADHD; many people simply find a spoken, highlighted text easier to stay with.

Languages and translation

Which languages can it read in?

English (US and UK), Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese — with a woman’s or a man’s voice in all of them except French, which has a woman’s voice.

Can it just read the page, without translating?

Yes. Choose the language the page is written in and it’s read as it is. Choose another one and it’s translated first.

Can it translate a page into the language I’m learning?

Yes. Choose that language when you make the book, and the text is translated in natural sentences before it’s read. Anything already in that language is kept as it is.

Which language is it translated into?

The one you choose when you add the page, any of the 14 the app reads in. Choose the page’s own language instead and it’s read as printed, without translation.

Does it translate live, through the camera?

No. You take a photo, or pick one, and choose your language; the text is then translated and a book is made of it to listen to.

Pages, pricing and free pages

Is it free?

It’s free to download. Pages come in packs that never expire, or with the Premium subscription, weekly or monthly. Prices vary by country and are shown in the app and in the pricing section.

What is a page?

A page is one photo or one page of a PDF, up to 5,000 characters — a denser PDF page counts as more than one — or up to 2,500 characters of text you type, paste or have the AI write. It covers everything done with it: reading the photo, translating it and reading it aloud. Playing a book again costs nothing — that page is already paid for.

Are any pages free?

The first 5 pages are free, once per account. They are added automatically, and they don’t come back when they are used up.

Does listening again cost anything?

No. Playing a book again is free, as often as you like. Pages are used only when a book is made; see pricing.

Does an AI text use pages?

Writing it is free. Pages are used when you make a book of it, as with any text. To write one, you need enough pages on your balance for a book of the length you chose.

What is Premium?

A subscription, weekly or monthly, that adds a set number of pages at the start of each period, in all 14 languages; the app shows how many before you subscribe. Pages you don’t use by the end of the period expire. Premium pages are used first, pack pages after them. It renews automatically until you cancel it.

What are page packs?

Packs of pages, bought once in the app at your country’s App Store or Google Play price. A pack doesn’t renew, and its pages never expire — they wait on your account until you use them, after your Premium pages.

How do I cancel Premium?

On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions and choose Outloud Reader. On Android, open Google Play → your profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions and choose Outloud Reader. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid the next charge. Premium and its pages stay until the end of the period you have paid for, and pages from packs stay on your account.

How do I ask for a refund?

Refunds are the store’s to grant, not ours: for the App Store, use reportaproblem.apple.com; for Google Play, follow Google’s Request a refund on Google Play. If something about the app was wrong, we would rather hear it first — write to us.

What does “Restore purchases” do?

It looks for packs paid for on this Apple Account — on Android, on the Google account Google Play uses on this phone — that have not been added yet, and adds them. On Android it also brings back a Premium subscription bought on that account. The pages you already have are already on your account and don’t need restoring.

Privacy and data

What happens to my photos?

To recognise, translate and read your pages, the app sends the photos and text you add to our server, where AI and speech services process them. Photos are deleted after processing, and your data is never sold or used for ads. The details are in the privacy policy.

Where can I read how my pages are processed?

Before your first book, the app asks you to agree to how your pages are processed; you can read it again in Account → How your pages are processed. What is sent, who processes it and how long it is kept is on the privacy page.

Are there ads?

No. There are no ads in the app, and your data is never sold or used for ads.

Devices and sync

Does it work on a tablet?

Yes, on iPad and on Android tablets. On iPhone and iPad, turn on iCloud sync and your books and their audio appear on every iPhone and iPad signed in to the same iCloud account. On Android, they stay on the device they were made on.

Do I need an internet connection?

To create a book, yes: the text is recognised, translated and voiced online. The audio is then kept on your device.

How do I keep my library in iCloud?

Where your version of the app offers it, turn on Account → iCloud sync: your books and their audio are kept in your iCloud and on every device signed into it. Delete data from iCloud removes them from iCloud only — nothing is deleted from your devices, and sync turns off on all of them.

I have a new phone, or reinstalled the app

Nothing to do — your page balance comes back by itself. On iPhone and iPad it is recognised by your App Store account (or, if you use iCloud sync, your iCloud); books are kept on the device they were made on, and where your version of the app offers iCloud sync, turning it on brings them to your other devices too. On Android it is recognised by an account key in your Google backup; if Android’s backup is on, your books’ text comes back from it too, without the audio and the original photos.

The audio stops in the middle

Playback pauses for calls, alarms and other apps that take over the sound, and resumes when they are done. If it does not resume, press play again — your place is kept.

Your account and deleting your data

Do I need to sign up?

No. There’s no sign-up and nothing to sign in to: the app creates your account itself, the first time it needs one.

What is the support code?

A code that identifies your account, in Account → Support code. Send it to us when you write about your pages or purchases. It is not a password: by itself, it does not let anyone reach your account, and support does not delete, transfer or restore anything using only the code. To delete your data, use the button in the app; to restore a purchase, use Restore purchases on your own Apple Account or Google account.

How do I delete my data?

In Account → Delete my data. This deletes your page balance and the pages left on it, paid ones included, from our server, and your imports. It cannot be undone, and it doesn’t cancel Premium — cancel that in your Apple Account settings, or on Android in Google Play → Subscriptions. Your books are not deleted — they stay in your library. If you no longer have the app, see Delete your data. What is kept afterwards is on the privacy page.

Can I delete my data without the app?

Yes. Write to support@outloudreader.app and tell us what you want deleted; we may need to confirm that the account is yours first. The details are on Delete your data.
