Quick answer

Outloud Reader is for anyone who would rather listen to a text, or listen and read together. Students revise lecture notes by ear, listeners turn paper books and PDFs into audio, language learners hear a text in the language they’re learning, and travellers have a menu or a letter translated and read aloud. It also reads handwriting and screenshots, and many people simply find a spoken, highlighted text easier to follow.

Who it’s for,
and what they bring.

Eight ways people use it. Each one has a page of its own.

Lecture notes

Students

Photograph lecture notes, a handout or a textbook page, or open the slides as a PDF, and revise by ear on the bus or on a walk. Speed it up, slow it down, and play it again as often as you like.

Long reads

People who prefer to listen

Turn a paper book, a PDF or a long article into an audiobook read in a natural voice. Every book stays in your library with its audio.

Spanish, B1

Language learners

Hear a text in the language you’re learning while each phrase lights up, translate a page into it, or ask for a new text at your level, A1 to C2.

Reading support

Dyslexia and reading difficulties

Hear the page while each phrase is highlighted, at your own pace, with the text set the way you like it. Many people find a text easier to follow that way.

Focus

Reading with ADHD

If your attention drifts, the highlight shows where the voice is, so you can find your place again. Listen and read together, or just listen.

Travel

Translate and listen

Photograph a menu, a sign, a letter or a form in another language, and hear it translated into yours and read aloud. It’s a photo, not a live camera view.

Commute

Listen on the go

Make the reading pile into audio before you leave, then listen on the train, on a walk or at the gym. It plays offline and with the screen off.

Your next page, read aloud.

Questions, answered.

Something else? Write to support@outloudreader.app and a person will answer.

Is this an e-book reader?

No. There’s no store and no catalogue. Outloud Reader turns the text you bring into audio: photos of pages, PDFs, text you paste, or a text written for you by AI.

Is it a text to speech app?

It turns text from photos, PDFs and pasted text into natural speech in 14 languages, but it’s made for listening and following along: each phrase is highlighted, and the text can be translated first. The audio stays in your library in the app; it isn’t exported as an MP3 file.

Which languages can it read in?

English (US and UK), Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese — with a woman’s or a man’s voice in all of them except French, which has a woman’s voice.

Do I need an internet connection?

To create a book, yes: the text is recognised, translated and voiced online. The audio is then kept on your device.
