Terms of Use
These terms are the agreement between you and Outloud Reader for using the Outloud Reader app and its online service. They are written to be read: what you get, what you pay for, what we ask of you, and what we can and can’t promise.
1. About these terms
Outloud Reader is made and run by an independent developer, referred to here as “Outloud Reader”, “we” or “us”. You can reach us at support@outloudreader.app.
By downloading or using the app you accept these terms, our privacy policy and the content rules for AI texts. If you don’t accept them, please don’t use the app.
Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have as a consumer under the law of the country you live in that cannot be waived by agreement.
2. The service
Outloud Reader turns text you bring — photos of pages, pages of a PDF, text you paste or type, or a text the app writes for you with AI — into audio read by a natural voice, with each phrase highlighted as it is spoken. If you choose a language other than the page’s, the text is translated first.
Making a book needs an internet connection: the pages are recognised, translated and voiced on our server and by the service providers described in the privacy policy. Before your first book the app asks you to agree to this processing; nothing is sent until you do. A finished book and its audio are kept on your device and can be played without a connection.
3. Who can use it
You must be at least 13 years old to use Outloud Reader. If you are under the age of majority where you live, or under the age at which you can consent to the processing of your data on your own (for example, 16 in some countries of the European Union), a parent or guardian must agree to these terms for you and to your use of the app, including any purchases.
You may not use the app if the law of your country, or a sanctions list that applies to you, forbids it.
4. Your account
You don’t sign in. The app creates your account itself and recognises it: on iPhone and iPad by your App Store account and your iCloud, on Android by an account key the app keeps in your Google backup. Your account keeps your page balance and your purchases, and is shown in the app by a support code, which identifies the account to us but cannot be used to access it.
The account is for you alone. You are responsible for what happens through your Apple Account or Google account and your devices, so keep them secure. Please don’t create several accounts to collect free pages again, and don’t share, sell or transfer your account.
You can delete your data at any time in the app, in Account → Delete my data, or, if you no longer have the app, as described on the Delete your data page. What that deletes and what we keep afterwards is in the privacy policy.
5. Pages, free pages, Premium and page packs
Pages. The service is paid for in pages. A page is a unit of text as defined in the app at the time you use it — currently one photo or one page of a PDF with up to 5,000 characters (a denser PDF page counts as more than one), or up to 2,500 characters of text you type, paste or have the AI write — and covers everything done with it: recognising it, translating it and reading it aloud. A page is used when you create a book from it; if a page can’t be made — for example, because no text is found on it — it is returned to your balance. Writing an AI text doesn’t use pages until you create a book from it. Playing a book again doesn’t use pages.
Free pages. A new account receives a number of free pages, shown in the app, once. Free pages are not given again to an App Store account or device that has already received them, and they don’t come back when they are used up. We may change the number of free pages for new accounts or stop offering them.
Premium. Premium is an auto-renewing subscription, weekly or monthly, that adds a set number of pages at the start of each period, as shown in the app before you subscribe. Pages from Premium are used before pages from packs. Pages you haven’t used by the end of a period expire and don’t carry over to the next one. Premium renews automatically at the price shown in the App Store until you cancel it; Apple charges your Apple Account for the renewal within 24 hours before the current period ends. You can cancel at any time in your Apple Account settings; to avoid the next charge, cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Premium and its pages then stay until the end of the period you have paid for. Deleting your account in the app doesn’t cancel Premium. In the Android app, Premium is bought through Google Play instead: it renews at the price shown in Google Play and is charged to your Google account, and you cancel it in Google Play → Subscriptions, at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid the next charge.
Page packs. You can also buy packs of pages in the app. A pack is a one-time purchase: it doesn’t renew and nothing is charged automatically. Pages from packs don’t expire on a date; they stay on your account until you use them.
Unused pages. Pages have no cash value. They can’t be exchanged for money, transferred to another account or carried outside the app. If you delete your account, the pages left on it, paid ones included, are deleted with it and can’t be restored. If we ever decide to close the service, we will announce it in the app and on this website at least 30 days in advance, so you have time to use your pages; any refund for unused pages is handled as described under Purchases and refunds.
Limits. To keep the service fair and affordable, some use is limited, for example the size of a page and of a book, or the number of AI texts per day. The current limits are shown in the app, on the support page and in the content rules.
6. Purchases and refunds
Premium and page packs are sold through Apple’s App Store as in-app purchases. Apple takes the payment, charges it to your Apple Account, sets the price in your country’s currency, including any taxes, and handles refunds under its own terms. We never see your payment details.
In the Android app, they are sold through Google Play instead: Google Play takes the payment, charges it to your Google account, sets the price in your country’s currency, including any taxes, and handles refunds under its own policies. There too, we never see your payment details.
We don’t issue refunds ourselves: to ask for one, use reportaproblem.apple.com for a purchase made through the App Store, or Google’s Request a refund on Google Play for one made through Google Play. If something in the app went wrong, please write to us as well; we will try to put it right.
When Apple or Google Play refunds a pack, the pages it added are removed from the account, even if they have already been used, and creating new books may be paused for that account until a new pack is bought. If the refund is reversed, the pages are given back.
If a purchase was charged but its pages didn’t arrive, use Restore purchases in the app or write to us with the date of the purchase.
7. Your content
The photos, files and text you add, and the prompts you write, remain yours. To provide the service, you allow us and our service providers to process them — store them for a short time, recognise, translate, check and voice them — only as needed to make your books and to keep the service safe, as described in the privacy policy. We don’t claim any ownership of your content, and we don’t use it to advertise or sell it.
You may only add content that you have the right to use in this way. Outloud Reader is meant for your personal use: listening to your own notes, materials you were given, books you own or texts you are allowed to read. The audio the app makes from someone else’s work is for your own listening; please don’t publish or distribute it without the right to do so.
You are responsible for the content you add and for having the right to use it. We don’t review what you add before it is processed, and we are not responsible for it. Imported pages are checked automatically; a page that breaks these terms or the content rules may be refused, without charge.
Please don’t add other people’s personal information unless you need to and are allowed to. If you believe content processed through Outloud Reader infringes your rights, write to support@outloudreader.app with enough detail for us to find it.
8. AI processing and AI texts
Recognising, translating, voicing and writing texts are done by automated systems, including artificial intelligence. They make mistakes: a word can be misread, a translation can be wrong, a name can be mispronounced, and a text can contain facts that are not true. Treat the results as a reading and learning aid. For anything that matters — an official letter, a contract, instructions for medicine or safety — check the original or ask a qualified person. Nothing the app produces is medical, legal, financial or other professional advice.
AI texts are written for a 13+ audience and follow the content rules. Requests and texts are checked automatically; the checks can refuse something harmless or, rarely, let through something they should not. If a text shouldn’t have been written, report it in the app or write to us.
You may use the texts the app writes for you for your own learning and reading. Similar requests can lead to similar texts for other people, so we can’t promise that a text is unique.
9. Acceptable use
When you use Outloud Reader, you agree not to:
- add, request or share content that is illegal, sexualises minors or approves of or dwells on the abuse of children, gives instructions for weapons, explosives, making drugs, hacking or fraud, calls for violence or hatred against people, or encourages suicide or self-harm;
- use the app to infringe copyright or other rights of others, or to harass, threaten or defame anyone;
- try to get around the content rules, the limits, the free-page rules or the payment system, for example with several accounts or by requesting refunds for pages you have used;
- access our server other than through the app, use bots or scripts, or put an unreasonable load on the service;
- copy, modify, decompile or reverse-engineer the app or the service, except where the law allows it regardless of this term;
- probe, test or break the security of the service, or access data that isn’t yours;
- use the service, its audio or its texts to train or build AI models or a competing service, or resell the service.
10. Availability and changes to the service
We work to keep the service running, but we can’t promise that it will always be available, uninterrupted or free of errors. It depends on the internet and on outside providers, and we may need to pause it for maintenance.
The service will change over time. We may add or remove features, voices and languages, change the service providers we use, or change the limits. If a voice isn’t available when a page is made, another voice may read it for the time being. We won’t take away pages you have already paid for because of such changes.
11. Our rights and your licence to use the app
The app, its design, its software, the website and the name Outloud Reader belong to us or to our licensors. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the app on Apple devices that you own or control, as allowed by the App Store’s usage rules, or on Android devices that you own or control, as allowed by Google Play’s terms of service, for your personal, non-commercial purposes. You get no other rights in the app.
Some parts of the app and the service use open-source software and third-party voice models, which are used under their own licences.
12. The App Store, Apple and Google Play
If you got the app from Apple’s App Store, the following also applies:
- These terms are between you and Outloud Reader, not Apple. We, not Apple, are responsible for the app and its content.
- Your licence to use the app is limited to Apple-branded devices that you own or control, as allowed by the Usage Rules in the App Store’s terms of service. Family Sharing does not apply to Premium or to page packs, which are consumable purchases.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app. For support, contact us.
- If the app does not conform to a warranty that applies to it, you can notify Apple, and Apple will refund the price you paid for the app, if any. To the fullest extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app; any other claim, loss or cost caused by a failure to conform to a warranty is our responsibility, to the extent these terms and the law make us responsible.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for handling any claims by you or a third party relating to the app or your use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
- If a third party claims that the app or your use of it infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging that claim.
- You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated by the U.S. Government as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- You must also comply with the terms of the third-party services you use with the app, such as your Apple Account and iCloud.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and, once you accept them, may enforce them against you.
Where these terms say less than the App Store’s standard licence for apps (Licensed Application End User License Agreement) on a point, that licence applies on that point. Where these terms and that licence conflict, these terms prevail, except for the points in this section.
If you got the app from Google Play, Google Play’s Terms of Service and its policies also apply to your download and your purchases. These terms are between you and Outloud Reader, not Google: we, not Google, are responsible for the app, its content and its support. Google Play Family Library does not apply to Premium or to page packs. Where these terms and Google Play’s terms differ on paying for, refunding or cancelling a purchase made through Google Play, Google Play’s terms apply on that point.
13. Disclaimers
To the extent the law allows, the app and the service are provided “as is” and “as available”. We don’t promise that recognition, translation, pronunciation, word timings or AI texts will be accurate, complete or suitable for a particular purpose, or that the service will meet all your needs.
Some countries do not allow these exclusions. Where you live in such a country, they apply only as far as the law allows, and your statutory rights — for example, the legal guarantee that digital content conforms to the contract — are not affected.
14. Indemnity
To the extent the law allows, you agree to cover our reasonable costs and losses from claims by others that arise from content you added or from your breach of these terms.
15. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for loss of data, profits or opportunities, or for loss caused by relying on a recognition, translation or AI text without checking it.
To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for all claims relating to the app and the service is limited to the amount you paid for Premium and page packs in the 12 months before the claim arose, or 50 US dollars, whichever is greater.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for harm caused intentionally or by gross negligence.
16. Suspension and ending
You can stop using Outloud Reader at any time and delete your data in the app.
We may refuse a request, suspend your account or close it if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, abuse the service or the refund process, put the service or other people at risk, or if the law requires it. Where it is reasonable, we will tell you why and give you a chance to respond. If we close your account because you broke these terms, unused pages are not refunded, except where the law requires otherwise.
Sections that by their nature should continue after the agreement ends — for example on your content, our rights, disclaimers, limitation of liability and governing law — continue to apply.
17. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms when the app, the law or our providers change. The date at the top shows the latest version. If a change matters to you — for example, how pages or purchases work — we will tell you in the app or on this website before it takes effect, normally at least 14 days in advance. If you continue to use the app after the change takes effect, the new terms apply; if you don’t agree, you can stop using the app and delete your data. Changes never take away pages you have already bought.
18. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be decided by the state and federal courts located in California.
If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you can bring a claim in the courts of that country where its law allows.
Before going to court, please write to us first; most problems can be solved by email.
19. General
These terms, together with the privacy policy and the content rules, are the whole agreement between you and us about Outloud Reader. If any part of them is found to be invalid, the rest still applies. If we don’t enforce a right at once, we haven’t given it up. You may not transfer your rights under these terms to someone else; we may transfer ours to whoever takes over the service, provided your rights under these terms are not reduced.
These terms are written in English and translated into other languages for convenience. If a translation differs from the English text, the English text prevails, unless the law of your country requires otherwise.
